Sebastien Schutze (Queen's University, Kingston)'Bernini and the Physiognomy of Spirit and Soul'
My paper explores Bernini's approach to physiognomy in his portraits and self-portraits, in particular his attempts to represent the spirit and the soul of the portrayed, and his concept of likeness. Bernini was well versed in the early modern physiognomy discourse, and experimented throughout his life time with artistic solutions to better define the complex relation between outer appearance and inner being.
